Autistic Children can have Extreme Hearing Sensitivity

Autistic Children can have Extreme Hearing Sensitivity

According to the Autism Society, 1 in 68 births in the United States will bring a child into the world with some degree of Autism. Incidence of autism increased 119.4% from 2000 to 2010, and is the fast growing developmental disability in America.  While these children are beautiful gifts as are all children, they come with a special list of needs that are critical to their development.

One of the most common symptoms of Autism is extreme noise sensitivity.  Autistic children can often hear things well before non autistic children or their parents can catch the sound.  Imagine your child hearing a school bus a half mile away.  Sounds like a superhero power, until you imagine what that might sound like when its 30 feet away.  Sadly, everyday noises can cause extreme pain, noise paranoia, screaming fits, and anxiety.

Specialists have found that there are 5 common types of noise sensitivity in autistic children.  They are Hyperacusis, Hypersensitive hearing of specific frequencies, Recruitment, Phonophobia, and Misophonia.  Each has its own particular set of impacts, but they all have one thing in common-they make everyday noises traumatic for children.

Experts have traditionally recommended noise canceling headphones as the best solution available, but admit that children often become dependent on these and then have more trouble developing language skills because they are blocked out from hearing others speak.  They are unsuitable for sleeping, as well.

HUSH Baby, LLC has another solution.  The HUSH Hat is a sound absorbing Infant Hat that will soften harsh sounds. With 4 sizes available, they will fit newborns to age 2.  The HUSH Band will help children from age 2 to age 6. Both of these products utilize a medical grade specialty foam, sewn into the hat/band that, through vigorous testing with Owens Corning Labs has been engineered to allow lower decibel sounds through but to filter out louder sounds.  They are comfortable enough to wear while asleep and when out and about, and are soft and lightweight.  While The HUSH Band won't be available on our website until late April, you can find The HUSH Hat at www.shophushbaby.com.

HUSH Baby, LLC has a heart for these special children and has donated HUSH Hats to local Autism centers.  We want to help you, too.  When ordering, enter the coupon code GREATKIDS15  for a 15% discount off your order.
